Manchester United confirmed the dismissal of manager Ruben Amorim on Monday after 14 months in charge, following a deteriorating relationship with club officials and Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United. Former midfielder Darren Fletcher will take charge for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley before a caretaker manager is appointed for the remainder of the season.

Manchester United Sack Ruben Amorim After 14 Months With Club Planning Summer Replacement

The Portuguese manager departed Old Trafford less than 24 hours after making pointed comments about wanting to work as a manager “not the coach” following the 1-1 draw at Elland Road. United stated the decision was made “reluctantly” with the club sitting sixth in the Premier League, believing “it is the right time to make a change” to give the team “the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”

Amorim’s relationship with club officials had become increasingly strained, particularly after a hostile meeting with director of football Jason Wilcox on Friday regarding his tactics and formation choices. The 40-year-old reacted negatively to criticism of his approach in the 1-1 draw against Wolves, where he reverted to a three-man defence after successfully using a back four against Newcastle on Boxing Day.

The former Sporting manager hinted at internal divisions during Friday’s news conference, suggesting he would not be fully backed in the transfer market. His final comments after the Leeds match effectively forced United’s hand, with sources telling BBC Sport the club felt there had been insufficient evidence of evolution or progress under his management despite spending over 200 million pounds on summer signings.

Amorim won 25 of his 63 games in charge across all competitions, recording the worst win ratio in Premier League matches of any permanent United manager at 31.9 percent. His 14-month tenure represents the shortest reign of a permanent manager at United since David Moyes was dismissed after eight months in 2014, with the club having paid Sporting 11 million euros to trigger his release clause in November 2024.

Fletcher, currently the under-18s head coach and former technical director, will hold Tuesday’s news conference before the Burnley fixture despite never holding a senior coaching position. The 41-year-old former Scotland international won five Premier League titles and the 2007-08 Champions League during his playing career at United between 2002 and 2015, with the club planning to name a permanent successor in the summer.
