Celtic have parted company with manager Wilfried Nancy following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat by Rangers, with the 48-year-old’s 33-day reign becoming the shortest in the club’s history after losing six of his eight matches in charge since taking over on 4 December.

Celtic Dismiss Wilfried Nancy After Record-Breaking Short Reign of Just 33 Days

The Frenchman signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Scottish champions after concluding the Major League Soccer season with Columbus Crew, but Celtic’s form slumped dramatically under his management. Nancy became the first Celtic manager to lose his first two games before suffering a 3-1 defeat by St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup final and a 2-1 reverse at Dundee United, marking the first time Celtic had lost four games in a row since 1978 under Jock Stein.

Celtic managed back-to-back league victories against Aberdeen and Livingston to halt the losing streak, but were beaten 2-0 at Motherwell on Tuesday before collapsing in a dismal second-half performance at home to Rangers on Saturday. Under Nancy’s management, Celtic conceded 18 goals in eight matches, one more than they had shipped during the opening 24 games of the season under interim manager Martin O’Neill.

The club confirmed Nancy’s departure alongside his coaching staff Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen and Maxime Chalier in a brief statement, while also removing Paul Tisdale from his position as head of football operations. Tisdale, the former Exeter City and Stevenage manager, had been in the role since October 2024, with Celtic promising supporters that a further update will be provided as soon as practical.

Celtic currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership with 38 points from 20 games, six points behind Hearts and ahead of Rangers on goals scored. Their points total represents a decline of 15 points compared to the same stage of the previous campaign, with the champions of 13 of the past 14 seasons struggling to maintain their domestic dominance under Nancy’s tactical approach.

Nancy’s dismissal surpasses John Barnes as Celtic’s shortest serving permanent manager, with Barnes overseeing 29 matches during his eight-month tenure from June 1999 to February 2000. The former MLS manager of the year for 2024 leaves Celtic having won just five of his latest 20 games as a coach, following his successful period at Columbus Crew where he led them to the MLS Cup in 2023 and the Leagues Cup.
