Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is getting closer to returning as Manchester United manager on an interim basis until the end of the season, with the Norwegian telling the club he has no problem with contract terms, timing or salary arrangements.
Romano Confirms Solskjaer Getting Closer to Manchester United Return
Manchester United moved quickly to find a replacement for Ruben Amorim, who was sacked on Monday morning following his reported fallout with director of football Jason Wilcox. Amorim’s position became untenable after United’s performances and results proved far from good enough over the past 14 months, prompting the Premier League giants to seek an interim solution until summer 2026.
The Athletic named Solskjaer as a leading contender for the caretaker role, while talkSPORT reported he is the clear favourite among several candidates including Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Journalist Ben Jacobs indicated that Solskjaer has emerged as the frontrunner following advanced talks, with the former United striker benefiting from support among senior players and high-profile club legends.
Romano revealed on his YouTube channel that Solskjaer offered himself to Manchester United and negotiations are now underway between his representatives and the club. The transfer expert confirmed that Solskjaer told United he has no problem with contract details, timing or salary, stating he just wants to help the club and return to Old Trafford regardless of financial considerations.
United sources maintain that multiple candidates remain under consideration and a formal face-to-face interview with their preferred choice is still required before any final decision. The club plans to appoint a permanent manager in summer 2026 with what Romano described as a big name, viewing the interim appointment as a short-term solution while stronger long-term candidates become available.
