Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has sympathized with struggling Premier League champions Liverpool ahead of Thursday night’s clash, insisting that almost everything must be perfect to successfully defend a title despite their massive summer investment of over £400 million on new players.
Arteta Sympathizes With Liverpool’s Title Defense Struggles Despite £400m Summer Spending
The reigning champions would have hoped to travel to north London with a chance of claiming a title boost, but instead victory would only close the gap to 11 points behind Arsenal. Arteta was full of praise for Liverpool and manager Arne Slot despite the rivalry that has developed between the two clubs in recent seasons.
Arteta explained that the margins for success are extremely small for all Premier League clubs. “They have a great manager, they have a sensational structure,” Arteta said. “Understanding what they have to do in relation to the players that they select on the line, and they can play in different ways. Because at the end, those will make them a little bit different and more specific to what we can expect tomorrow, and we have to be conscious of that and then focus on what we have to do.”
When asked about his surprise at Liverpool’s struggles despite their significant summer spending, Arteta noted that the previous year they won the Premier League without spending much. “That’s football, and that’s the reality of that. At the end, you need a lot of things to go your way to be champions, and almost everything has to be perfect,” he said. “The moment you have issues around the squad or with players injured or whatever it is, then it is not that perfect.”
Arteta suggested that while major investment doesn’t guarantee immediate success, historically high spending on wages and quality players leads to success over time. “Over a certain period of time, you are going to be very successful. That’s the history of the Premier League. It is not something that I am saying that has happened time after time in this league over the years,” he explained.
The Arsenal manager also addressed criticism of his tactical approach from their previous meeting at Anfield, defending his team selection decisions. “We have all the information. You guys don’t, and it’s normal, and we don’t want to provide that either,” Arteta said. “So normally with the information that you have, you have to make the judgment that, in your opinion, was the best case to win the game. That has to be accepted.”
