Manchester United interim head coach Darren Fletcher praised the club’s “amazing” Academy during his pre-match media briefing ahead of Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup third-round clash with Brighton, while confirming Noussair Mazraoui and Bryan Mbeumo remain unavailable for selection at Old Trafford.
Fletcher Hails United’s “Amazing” Academy Record Ahead of FA Cup Brighton Clash
Fletcher emphasised the historical importance of Manchester United’s youth development system when discussing the impact of young players like Shea Lacey, who impressed off the bench during the recent 2-2 draw with Burnley. The interim manager stated that the club has been “built around the Academy” and described their record as “hard to beat in terms of the history of clubs around the world.”
The former United midfielder expressed confidence in the current crop of Academy players, describing them as “hard-working, humble young players” with exceptional talent. Fletcher acknowledged that young players require patience and guidance, stating that the club must “let them learn, educate them, help them, understand they’re going to make mistakes.” He praised the Academy graduates as “hard-working, honest, coachable, super-talented kids” during his Carrington press conference.
Fletcher confirmed that the squad remains unchanged from the Burnley fixture, with Mazraoui and Mbeumo still unavailable following their recent returns from international duty. Harry Maguire, who appeared on the bench against Burnley after his injury layoff, may require careful load management for the weekend fixture. The interim manager indicated that several returning players, including Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, need gradual reintegration following their recent absences.
Addressing the controversial VAR decision during the Burnley match, Fletcher criticised officials for failing to review Kyle Walker’s challenge on Patrick Dorgu while disallowing United’s goal. He expressed concern that such inconsistencies encourage players to be “theatrical” to gain officials’ attention, stating that VAR “should have looked at it” given the apparent contact. Fletcher praised Dorgu’s honest reaction to the incident, describing the defender as someone who would “never” exaggerate contact to influence referees.
The interim head coach confirmed he has not held discussions about his future with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, stating that he communicates directly with chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox. Fletcher emphasised his focus remains on preparing the team for the FA Cup tie, describing how the club’s hierarchy has given him “full responsibility to take control of these two games, make my own decisions, lead the team.”
