Torquay United Come From Behind to Beat Hampton & Richmond 4-1 in National League South
Aaron Lacey gave Hampton & Richmond a 21st-minute lead before Torquay responded with four unanswered goals to secure a convincing victory. Callum Dolan curled a 39th-minute equaliser into the corner of the net to level the score before half-time, setting the platform for the Gulls’ second-half dominance at their home ground.
Sonny Blu Lo-Everton fired Torquay ahead with an impressive strike into the top corner seven minutes into the second half, before Jordan Young extended the lead 11 minutes later. Dylan Morgan completed the scoring with a long-range effort in stoppage time to round off a comprehensive 4-1 victory for the home side.
The victory consolidates Torquay’s third place in National League South, leaving them two points behind second-placed Weston-super-Mare, who have a game in hand, and three points behind leaders Hornchurch. Manager Paul Wotton told BBC Radio Devon that he was delighted with his team’s response to going behind early in the match.
“It was a really good performance, a really good three points,” Wotton said. “Four top-class finishes, we should have had a lot more as well. I think all in all it was a very professional performance, a very patient performance. I thought we played some great football – we had a 10-second lapse where they score, but other than that I thought it was really, really good.”
Wotton praised his players’ mentality after falling behind, highlighting their belief in the team’s approach. “I loved that when we went 1-0 down, the boys just kept doing what they did, believed in the process and just kept doing the right things,” he added. “Sometimes it goes for you, like today – other times, like at Totton, it doesn’t and it’s pretty much copy and paste both games. But they’re believing in the process, the boys are in a good place. I say it all the time, this is a hell of a squad when everyone’s fit.”
