Celtic have recalled defender Stephen Welsh from his loan spell at Motherwell after the 25-year-old made 17 appearances for the Steelmen since joining in September, contributing to nine clean sheets under manager Jens Berthel Askou during his temporary stay at Fir Park.

Celtic Recall Stephen Welsh From Motherwell Loan to Strengthen Defence

The centre-back returns to Celtic Park having gained valuable first-team experience during his spell with Motherwell, where he established himself as a regular starter in the Scottish Premiership. Welsh had previously been loaned out by Celtic to Greenock Morton and Belgian side Mechelen as part of his development pathway before his latest temporary move.

The recall comes as Celtic look to bolster their central defensive options under the management structure, with the defending Scottish Premiership champions having recently defeated Dundee United 4-0 on Saturday. The club also completed the signing of right-back Julian Araujo at the start of the January transfer window as they strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.

Celtic’s defensive partnership of Liam Scales and Auston Trusty featured at the heart of the defence against United, while United States centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers continues his recovery from a long-term injury. Welsh’s return provides additional cover and competition for places in the central defensive positions as Celtic continue their title defence.

The 25-year-old has accumulated more than 100 senior club appearances throughout his career and will now rejoin Celtic’s first-team squad. His recall from Motherwell represents the end of a productive loan spell that provided regular playing time and helped maintain his match fitness ahead of his return to Parkhead.
