Per Mertesacker Confirms Arsenal Academy Departure After Eight-Year Tenure

The former defender has established himself as one of Arsenal’s most popular figures since transitioning directly from his playing career into the academy management role in 2018. Mertesacker has overseen the development of several promising talents at the Hale End Academy, with Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dowman all graduating under his guidance during his tenure.

Mertesacker acknowledged the difficulty of his decision, describing Arsenal as “a very special club” while expressing gratitude for the trust shown in his transition from first-team player to academy leadership. “Now it is time for me to move on and explore something new and push myself even further,” he stated, emphasising his commitment to finishing the season strongly and supporting a seamless transition process.

Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick praised Mertesacker’s contribution to the club’s youth development programme, highlighting his understanding of Arsenal’s values and his inspirational leadership of academy coaches, staff and young players. Garlick confirmed the club’s support for Mertesacker’s decision while expressing sadness at his departure, noting how the German has provided opportunities for many young talents to develop and shine.

The club will focus on implementing a succession plan while Mertesacker remains in his role until the season concludes. Garlick emphasised Arsenal’s continued commitment to academy investment as part of their pursuit of major trophies, with the search for Mertesacker’s replacement expected to begin immediately as the club seeks to maintain continuity in their youth development structure.
