Pep Guardiola has confirmed that James Trafford will not be allowed to leave Manchester City on loan this month, dealing a blow to the goalkeeper’s hopes of securing regular first-team football ahead of England’s World Cup squad selection later this year.

Guardiola Blocks Trafford Loan Move Despite England World Cup Concerns

Trafford will start City’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Tuesday, but the 23-year-old has struggled for regular opportunities since his summer move from Burnley. The England international has not appeared in the Premier League since August and has made only one Champions League appearance following his transfer to the Etihad Stadium.

The goalkeeper was demoted to second choice after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival at the end of the transfer window, limiting his chances of establishing himself as City’s number one. Trafford’s lack of game time led to him being dropped from England’s November internationals against Serbia and Albania, with Newcastle’s Nick Pope initially preferred before injury forced a late recall for the City keeper.

Guardiola acknowledged the difficult situation facing Trafford but insisted the club values his long-term potential despite the current circumstances. “I would like him to stay for many, many years here because he has the attributes to play for a top club like us,” the City manager explained. “James is a top keeper and there’s no doubt about that but the situation of the keepers is special, is different.”

However, Guardiola hinted that Trafford’s future could be reassessed at the end of the current season, suggesting the club may consider allowing him to seek regular first-team football elsewhere. “We’ll see what happens at the end of the season,” Guardiola added, having previously stated his belief that Trafford has the potential to become England’s number one goalkeeper in the future.
