Jurgen Klopp has dismissed speculation linking him with the Real Madrid job following Xabi Alonso’s abrupt dismissal after just six months in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the former Liverpool manager stating the situation triggered nothing for him personally.
Klopp Rules Out Real Madrid Move After Alonso’s Six-Month Tenure Ends
Alonso’s departure came in the immediate aftermath of Real Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in a cup final, with the Spanish giants moving quickly to dismiss the former Bayer Leverkusen coach despite his previous success in Germany. The decision highlighted the intense pressure and unreasonable expectations that managers face at the elite level, particularly at Madrid where patience remains a scarce commodity according to observers.
Speaking to ServusTV On just hours after Alonso’s dismissal was announced, Klopp confirmed his phone had been ringing but clarified that Real Madrid were not among the callers. The German expressed genuine surprise at Alonso’s exit, describing it as “another sign that something isn’t quite right there at the moment” and criticizing the timing of the decision made “in the heat of the moment” following the Barcelona defeat.
Klopp praised Alonso’s coaching abilities, noting that someone who had demonstrated such outstanding talent over two years at Leverkusen being forced to leave Madrid after six months showed there was no time afforded to modern managers. He emphasized that the speculation had “absolutely nothing to do with me” and confirmed he simply replied to concerned contacts with “various emojis” rather than engaging with the rumours seriously.
The former Liverpool manager left Anfield in May 2024 and has since taken on a role within Red Bull, with their chief Oliver Mintzlaff recently reiterating that Klopp does not want to coach at present. Liverpool have moved forward successfully under Arne Slot, who delivered a Premier League title in the 2024/25 season after taking over from Klopp, demonstrating the club’s smooth transition beyond their former manager’s era.
