Tottenham have confirmed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for £35 million, with the 25-year-old joining on a deal running until 2031 after Spurs beat Aston Villa to his signature following his brief spell in Spain.
Tottenham Complete £35 Million Signing of England Midfielder Conor Gallagher
Gallagher left Chelsea for Atletico Madrid in August 2024 for approximately £33 million as part of a deal that saw Portugal forward Joao Felix move to Stamford Bridge. The former Chelsea academy graduate has now returned to the Premier League after representing Atletico 77 times across all competitions, scoring seven goals during his time in La Liga.
The England international expressed his excitement about joining Spurs, stating he is “so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club.” Gallagher added that he knows “how great the fans are” and wants to “create special moments and memories together” at his new club.
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank praised the acquisition, describing Gallagher as “a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad.” Frank highlighted that Gallagher “has captained teams so will bring leadership, maturity, character and personality to our dressing room, while his running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch.”
The signing addresses Tottenham’s midfield needs after Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for at least three months requiring surgery following a hamstring injury sustained in last week’s 3-2 Premier League defeat by Bournemouth. Spurs currently sit 14th in the table on 27 points after 21 games and have won just one of their last six league matches.
Gallagher brings significant experience with 22 caps for England, including five appearances during the 2024 Euros campaign where England reached the final. The midfielder will hope his return to the Premier League will boost his chances of making England’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, having played only once under current manager Thomas Tuchel in a 3-1 friendly defeat by Senegal.
