Liverpool defender Andy Robertson would like to remain at the club beyond this summer when his contract expires but emphasised he is a player who wants to play football, with the Scotland international having started just four Premier League games this season despite 362 appearances for the Reds.
Andy Robertson Wants Liverpool Stay But Insists He Must Play Regular Football
The 31-year-old left-back confirmed he has had discussions with Liverpool about his future but stated nothing has been decided yet regarding his contract situation. Robertson has five months remaining on his current deal and acknowledged he needs to sit down with his family to decide his next move, considering both options to stay at Anfield and potential opportunities elsewhere.
Robertson joined Liverpool for £8m from Hull City in 2017 during Jurgen Klopp’s reign and has made 362 appearances for the club. However, he has found first-team opportunities limited this season, with Hungary international Milos Kerkez becoming Liverpool’s first-choice left-back since his £40m move from Bournemouth last summer, restricting Robertson to just four Premier League starts.
The Scotland international stressed his desire for regular playing time, stating he is a player who wants to be on the pitch and has previously played through injuries at various fitness levels for both club and country. Robertson admitted he has a different role at Liverpool this season which he is getting enjoyment from, but maintained that footballers want to play and anyone happy sitting on the bench does not belong at any football club.
Robertson was promoted to vice-captain after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s summer departure and confirmed his relationship with Liverpool’s senior figures remains excellent. The defender reflected on his eight-and-a-half-year contribution to the club, highlighting his performances, trophy wins and the value Liverpool received from their £8m investment, while expressing mutual respect between himself and the club’s hierarchy.
He acknowledged both he and Liverpool have shown each other more than enough respect over his tenure at Anfield, with the club rewarding him with good contracts when he performed well. Robertson stated he has given absolutely everything for Liverpool day in and day out, putting in performances he believes have been good while winning numerous trophies and experiencing many memorable moments during his time on Merseyside.
