Conor Gallagher has completed a £34.6 million transfer to Tottenham from Atletico Madrid, signing a contract until 2031 after Spurs moved quickly to secure the midfielder following Rodrigo Bentancur’s hamstring injury. The 25-year-old England international endured a frustrating first half of the season at Atletico, starting only four times in La Liga before returning to the Premier League.

Conor Gallagher Vows Special Moments After Completing £34.6m Tottenham Transfer

Tottenham moved quickly for Gallagher after losing Rodrigo Bentancur to a hamstring injury at Bournemouth last Wednesday, with the Uruguayan midfielder subsequently undergoing surgery. Spurs beat off competition from Aston Villa to secure a player they have long admired, having previously looked at Gallagher at the end of the 2023-24 season before he moved from Chelsea to Atletico for £34 million.

The transfer represents a return to familiar territory for Gallagher, who left the Premier League 18 months ago but struggled for regular football in Spain. The midfielder started only four times in La Liga during the first half of the season at Atletico Madrid, prompting his desire to return to English football and reignite his international career ahead of the World Cup this summer.

Gallagher expressed his excitement about joining Tottenham, stating he wanted to be a Spurs player and that the move happened very quickly. “I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club,” the midfielder said. “I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together.”

Thomas Frank praised Gallagher as a top midfielder who brings significant experience across the Premier League, La Liga and with the England national team. The Spurs manager highlighted the player’s leadership qualities, noting that Gallagher has captained teams and will bring maturity and character to the dressing room. Frank emphasized that Gallagher’s running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen Tottenham in a key area of the pitch.

The 25-year-old is in contention to make his Spurs debut in Saturday’s home game against West Ham as he looks to establish himself in the Premier League again. Gallagher has been capped 22 times by England and was a member of squads at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, though he last played for Thomas Tuchel’s team in June’s friendly defeat by Senegal.
