Huddersfield Town have dismissed manager Lee Grant after eight months in charge following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Burton Albion, with the League One club currently sitting sixth in the table and 10 points off the automatic promotion places despite significant summer investment in the squad.
Huddersfield Town Dismiss Lee Grant After Eight Months as Manager Following Defeat
The 42-year-old was appointed on a three-year contract in May 2024 in his first managerial role after spending three years on the coaching staff at Ipswich Town. Grant’s tenure began promisingly with five wins from the first seven league games, but the team has struggled for consistency since and Saturday’s defeat left them 16 points behind leaders Cardiff City having played a game more.
Owner Kevin Nagle confirmed the decision to part ways with Grant, stating that the club’s objectives were not being met despite reshaping the first team throughout the summer. “Entering this season with renewed optimism and hope having proactively reshaped our first team throughout the summer, we were clear about not only our ambitions but how we wanted to achieve them,” Nagle said. “Sadly, on current form, none of those objectives are being met, and with just under half of the season remaining we feel no other option but to make a change.”
Grant had overseen a significant squad overhaul during the summer transfer window, with Birmingham striker Alfie May signed for in excess of £1 million and experienced Championship players Jack Whatmough, Ryan Ledson and Lynden Gooch also brought in. The recruitment drive and Nagle’s ambitions saw Huddersfield backed as pre-season favourites for promotion, starting the campaign with a 3-0 home victory over Leyton Orient.
The Terriers reached third place when they travelled to Bradford City on 13 September but suffered a 3-1 defeat at Valley Parade and have not climbed that high since. Grant’s dismissal means Carlos Corberan in 2021-22 remains the last manager to lead the club for a whole season, with seven managers now coming and going since the Spaniard’s exit. Huddersfield are the seventh League One side to change manager this season and will host third-placed Bradford next Saturday looking to end a four-match winless run.
