Everton midfielder James Garner has signed a new four-and-a-half year contract, tying him to the club until June 2030. The 24-year-old joined the Toffees from Manchester United in 2022, and the club moved to extend his stay after a strong start to the current campaign. His previous deal had been set to expire in the summer.

Garner has started every Everton match in all competitions so far this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists. He has made 98 Premier League appearances for Everton since arriving in 2022. This season, he leads the league statistics for combined tackles, interceptions and key passes, with 64 tackles, 32 interceptions and 27 key passes for a combined total of 123.

Garner had been linked with a move back to Manchester United in December, before the club sacked head coach Ruben Amorim. A former England youth international, Garner joined United’s academy at the age of eight and progressed through the ranks before making seven first-team appearances. Since leaving for Everton, he has developed into a key part of the midfield.

Garner said Everton’s ambition this season is to get into Europe. “That’s what us, as a club, and us as players and staff, should be aiming for. Nothing less,” he told Everton TV. He also praised David Moyes, who returned for a second spell as Everton manager in January last year, saying the manager’s demands “suit exactly how I play” and that Moyes has been “really important” since arriving.

Everton are 10th in the Premier League, four points behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool, who are in fourth. Everton face Leeds at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday.
