Tribunal settles Liverpool-Chelsea compensation dispute over Ngumoha deal

The Professional Football Compensation Committee has ruled that Liverpool must pay Chelsea a guaranteed £2.8million for Rio Ngumoha’s academy transfer. The compensation package could reach £6.8million through performance-related add-ons, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein reporting the tribunal’s decision ends a notable dispute between the clubs.

Under Premier League regulations, clubs must compensate training academies when signing under-18 players regardless of transfer fees. Chelsea had demanded significant compensation reflecting their development investment in Ngumoha, particularly following his breakthrough into Liverpool’s first team since joining as a 16-year-old.

The £4million in potential bonuses depends on international honours, senior appearances and future contract milestones. Additionally, Chelsea will receive 20 per cent of any profit should Liverpool eventually sell the winger, with Ornstein confirming the settlement terms are non-negotiable.

Ngumoha has featured 13 times across all competitions this season, scoring once against Newcastle United in Liverpool’s second league match. The teenager has not started Premier League or Champions League fixtures but remains a useful squad option following his productive pre-season performances.

Liverpool endured six defeats in seven matches after winning their opening five league games, effectively ending their title defence hopes. However, the club remains active in the FA Cup and has qualified for the Champions League last 16, providing further opportunities for Ngumoha’s continued development.
