Aberdeen’s search for Jimmy Thelin’s replacement has entered its 37th day, with Norwegian coach Eirik Horneland emerging as the leading candidate despite no official appointment being confirmed. The prolonged process has drawn criticism from former Hearts manager Robbie Neilson, who believes the delay is creating instability within the squad. According to Bbc.com.

Aberdeen’s Extended Manager Hunt Sparks Stability Concerns After 37 Days

Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel warned last month that finding Thelin’s successor could take “six days, six weeks, or six months” as the club seeks someone to bring “fresh air” and “a certain fire” to the role. The German emphasised the importance of finding a manager who fits the club’s pre-determined playing style and culture rather than making a rushed appointment.

Former Hearts and Dundee United boss Robbie Neilson believes the extended search is having a negative impact on the squad. Speaking on the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast, he argued that whoever comes in now will be viewed as second or third choice if it isn’t Horneland.

Neilson criticised Aberdeen’s preparation, stating that a sporting director should maintain a list of three or four targets even when the current manager is performing well. He highlighted the need for stability following significant squad turnover, with six players arriving and nine departing during January’s transfer window after 15 new signings in the summer.

The former Scotland international expressed concern for interim boss Peter Leven, who must maintain authority while players speculate about his temporary status. Neilson noted that Leven faces the difficult task of implementing his ideas when players are thinking “he’s probably not going to be here tomorrow” as he continues taking games on a day-to-day basis.

Eirik Horneland, the former Rosenborg, Brann and St Etienne manager, visited Aberdeen last week for talks as he emerged as the front-runner. However, days later there remains no official update on the appointment, with Aberdeen having played five games under Leven’s interim leadership since Thelin’s departure while two fixtures have been postponed.
