Fernandes three assists away from breaking Premier League record as Rooney backs PFA bid
Bruno Fernandes stands on the brink of Premier League history, requiring just three more assists to surpass the current record of 20 held jointly by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. The Portuguese captain has delivered impressive numbers throughout the campaign for Michael Carrick’s side.
Wayne Rooney has thrown his weight behind Fernandes for the PFA Player of the Year award during a recent visit to Carrington with BBC Sport. “I genuinely think this year you should win it,” Rooney told Fernandes during their sit-down interview, praising his consistent leadership during difficult periods.
The Manchester United legend highlighted Fernandes’ exemplary influence on teammates, stating: “What you bring to the team, when the teams going through a bad period, you’re there consistently and you’re leading. I think you are the perfect example to your team-mates.” Rooney expressed confidence that the midfielder would claim the prestigious individual honour.
Fernandes acknowledged the privilege of being considered for the award, emphasising the special significance of peer recognition. “When you know it is players who vote for you, that has a little bit of a different impact because it is those players who you have been playing against,” the captain explained.
The Portuguese midfielder remains focused on collective success while appreciating individual recognition, admitting he would be “more than happy to win it” as it would be his first PFA Player of the Year award. United face Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday as they look to end the season strongly.
