Chelsea have no plans to let Estevao leave on loan, according to TEAMtalk, but that position could be revisited in January if his minutes under Xabi Alonso do not improve. The teenager is reported to be frustrated by his limited involvement in the opening stretch of the season. According to Eplindex.com.
Estevao’s January loan stance at Chelsea hinges on minutes under Alonso
The most consequential detail concerns a possible loan. Chelsea currently have no plans to let Estevao leave on that basis and remain committed to his development, TEAMtalk reports. However, the stance may be reassessed in January should his playing time fall short of expectations by then, with the new year a potentially important moment in judging his future.
The reason for the concern is a thin minutes tally. Estevao has managed only “47 minutes of Premier League football this term”, and he again began on the bench in the home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Portuguese teenager Geovany Quenda was given the start ahead of him, a decision the report says did not go unnoticed.
Estevao is said to be shocked by how little first-team football he has received, and surprised at being left on the sidelines so early in the campaign. Alonso’s message to the squad has been consistent, urging patience and asking players to wait for their moment. For a 19-year-old who made a strong impact in his first campaign, that is a difficult message to accept.
Inside Stamford Bridge, Estevao is still viewed as a major talent and an important part of the club’s long-term plans. Squad building has nonetheless complicated his path. The arrival of Morgan Rogers and the increasing prominence of Pedro Neto have tightened competition in forward areas, leaving him a harder route to regular starts.
From the player’s side, the report says he “firmly believes he should be playing more regularly”. He wants to become a fixture in Alonso’s side rather than spend the season as a spectator. Recently he started both of Brazil’s friendly matches, where he found the rhythm that has eluded him at club level.
