Barcelona’s Rashford pursuit complicated by financial reality and backup plans

Rashford’s impressive form at Barcelona has made a permanent deal seem inevitable, but financial constraints may force the club to explore alternatives. The 26-year-old joined on loan from Manchester United last summer with a £26million option to buy, delivering ten goals and 13 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions this season.

Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke confirmed mutual interest between player and club for a permanent arrangement. “There’s a willingness from both the club and the player to extend their stay at the Camp Nou,” O’Rourke stated, highlighting Rashford’s role in Barcelona’s success across multiple competitions including topping La Liga.

However, Spanish reports suggest Barcelona may lack sufficient funds to secure Rashford while also targeting a top-level centre-back and striker. This financial reality has forced the club to compile a four-man “Plan B” list featuring Jack Grealish, Nicolo Zaniolo, Said El Mala and Malick Fofana as potential alternatives.

Grealish emerges as a particularly viable option, with reports indicating Pep Guardiola would facilitate his departure from Manchester City. Barcelona scouts believe the former Aston Villa player could arrive “under very favourable conditions” through a loan deal with an option to buy, mirroring Rashford’s current arrangement.

The uncertainty creates a genuine possibility of Rashford returning to Manchester United, despite his successful rehabilitation at the Camp Nou. Joan Laporta’s potential re-election as president could influence the final decision, with the Barcelona chief described as a “big admirer” of the English forward’s contributions this season.
