The Republic of Ireland centre-back was available on a free transfer after Wrexham released him in September, despite his significant contribution to their remarkable rise through the divisions. O’Connell made 84 league appearances for the Red Dragons and played a key role in helping them secure three successive promotions that took them from the National League to the Championship.

O’Connell could make his debut for the League One side in Monday’s FA Cup third round trip to Liverpool at Anfield. The defender’s arrival provides Barnsley with additional defensive options as they look to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window, with manager Conor Hourihane seeking experienced players to bolster his promotion push.

Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane praised the signing, highlighting the qualities O’Connell will bring to his squad. “He brings real leadership, solidity, and football intelligence to our backline,” Hourihane told the club website. The manager’s comments suggest O’Connell will be expected to provide both defensive stability and guidance to younger players in the Barnsley squad as they continue their League One campaign.
