Bayern Munich are planning to sell Stuttgart loanee Alexander Nübel for €20 million after declaring Jonas Urbig as Manuel Neuer’s long-term successor, according to reports from Münchener Abendzeitung. The 29-year-old goalkeeper currently maintains a €12 million estimated market value but Bayern believe his performances can command a higher fee.
Bayern Munich Target €20 Million Sale of Alexander Nübel After Urbig Appointment
Nübel is currently in his third season as VfB Stuttgart’s number one goalkeeper following his initial season-long loan for the 2023-24 campaign. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl extended the arrangement for two additional years during summer 2024, but the club’s acquisition of Jonas Urbig from Cologne in January 2025 has effectively ended Nübel’s hopes of succeeding Neuer at the Allianz Arena.
Stuttgart are reportedly not interested in signing Nübel permanently despite his successful spell in the Baden-Württemberg capital. The Swabians are prepared to promote youngster Dennis Seimen to serve as their new number one next season, with Seimen currently on loan at SC Paderborn 07, which happens to be Nübel’s hometown club.
The twice-capped German international’s potential destination remains unclear, though he is expected to generate significant interest from multiple clubs. While Nübel could theoretically return to Bayern to compete with Urbig for the number one spot, this scenario appears highly unlikely given the club’s clear declaration of Urbig as their future goalkeeper and Neuer’s continued presence in the squad.
Nübel’s journey at Bayern has been complicated since his free transfer from Schalke in 2020, when many expected him to eventually replace Neuer. However, the veteran goalkeeper’s continued excellent form and fitness, combined with agent disputes over playing time guarantees, led to Nübel’s initial loan to AS Monaco for two seasons before his current Stuttgart arrangement.
The goalkeeper missed his best opportunity to claim Bayern’s number one spot when Neuer suffered a leg injury while skiing in December 2022. Nübel and his agent reportedly demanded guarantees about succeeding Neuer before agreeing to an early recall from Monaco, leading Bayern to sign Yann Sommer instead as a temporary solution while Neuer recovered from his injury.
