Bristol Rovers have signed centre-back Kofi Balmer on loan from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell until the end of the season, with the 25-year-old defender becoming the first new loanee to join after manager Steve Evans sent all five previous loan players back to their parent clubs last week.
Bristol Rovers Complete Season-Long Loan Deal for Motherwell Defender Kofi Balmer
The former Northern Ireland Under-21 international has agreed a deal running until the end of the current campaign after attracting significant interest from clubs across England and Scotland. Balmer moved to Motherwell in the summer of 2024 after leaving Crystal Palace, where he had previously spent time on loan at Port Vale and AFC Wimbledon in the English Football League.
The defender has made 31 appearances for Motherwell since his arrival but has not featured in the first team since 27 September. His loan move to Bristol Rovers represents a return to English football after his stint in the Scottish Premiership, with the Gas securing his services ahead of multiple competing clubs.
Bristol Rovers manager Steve Evans expressed his satisfaction at completing the signing, crediting recruitment chief Ricky Martin and the scouting team for their efforts in securing Balmer’s signature. Evans described the defender as “a versatile defender who is calm, composed and comfortable in possession” and highlighted his experience in both the EFL and Scottish Premiership as valuable assets for the squad.
The manager also praised Balmer’s attitude during negotiations, stating that the player “spoke of having lots to prove” which appealed to Evans’ recruitment philosophy. “I love kids who have that desire when they come here,” Evans told the club website, suggesting the defender’s motivation played a key role in Bristol Rovers’ decision to pursue the loan deal.
