Celtic have firmly rejected Nottingham Forest’s escalating pursuit of Arne Engels, turning down a £17m bid for the Belgium midfielder. Interim manager Martin O’Neill has made clear his determination to retain the 22-year-old despite Forest’s persistent interest in the player. According to Bbc.com.

Forest’s pursuit began with an initial £14m offer that was swiftly rejected by Celtic. The Premier League club then increased their bid to £17m, but this too was turned down by the Scottish giants who remain determined to keep their key midfielder.

Engels joined Celtic for £11m from German club Augsburg in August 2024 and has since become integral to their success. The midfielder has made 89 appearances across all competitions and played a crucial role in helping Celtic secure both the Scottish Premiership and League Cup last season.

O’Neill expressed surprise at Forest’s approach when questioned following Celtic’s 2-0 victory over Falkirk on Sunday. “Honestly, I am telling you, I didn’t know anything about it,” the interim manager stated, adding that he would want any bid “rebuffed, unless it was £100m” before declaring his preference to retain the player.

The transfer interest comes as both clubs prepare for Europa League play-off fixtures this month. Celtic currently sit second in the Premiership, six points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian, while Forest occupy 17th position in the Premier League table.

O’Neill revealed that Celtic are close to completing two signings of their own, suggesting the club are focused on strengthening rather than selling key assets. Engels has contributed five goals for Celtic this season as they continue their domestic and European campaigns.
