Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish blocked Marc Guéhi’s £35 million transfer to Liverpool on deadline day, collapsing the deal despite agreed personal terms and an imminent medical.

Palace Chairman Halts Guéhi’s Liverpool Move Despite Agreed £35m Fee and Personal Terms

Crystal Palace effectively ended Marc Guéhi’s proposed move to Liverpool by refusing to complete the £35 million transfer deal on deadline day, despite Liverpool having approved the fee and Guéhi being set for his medical. Chairman Steve Parish made the decisive intervention after reassessing Palace’s position, particularly considering injuries to key players Adam Wharton and Ismaila Sarr that left the squad vulnerable.

The England defender had agreed personal terms on a five-year contract running until 2030, with all parties understanding the deal was progressing toward completion. However, Palace’s late change of heart stemmed from concerns about insufficient time to secure an adequate replacement before the transfer window closed, leaving manager Oliver Glasner without defensive cover during a crucial period.

Glasner publicly confirmed Palace’s stance, stating: “There is no deal. We can decide, he is our player and under contract. The only one who decides if Marc has to stay is our chairman.” The Austrian manager’s relief was evident, particularly after Guéhi’s recent goal in Palace’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, underlining his continued importance as captain and defensive leader.

Liverpool’s frustration remains unspoken officially, though sources indicate acceptance of the collapsed deal due to Palace’s firm intervention. The Merseyside club had completed their due diligence and medical preparations, only to see Parish prioritize squad stability over the substantial transfer fee that would have represented significant profit on Guéhi’s original acquisition.

The defender now faces an uncertain future with just one year remaining on his Palace contract, while reports suggest Real Madrid and Barcelona are monitoring his situation ahead of potential pre-contract negotiations from January 2026. Whether Liverpool will renew their interest in January or Palace will attempt contract extension talks remains unclear, leaving Guéhi’s long-term future unresolved despite his immediate retention at Selhurst Park.
