Ethan Nwaneri has endured a frustrating season at Arsenal with limited playing time despite his impressive breakthrough campaign last term when he scored nine goals in 37 appearances while deputising for injured Bukayo Saka on the right wing.

Nwaneri Struggles for Game Time as Arsenal’s Summer Signings Limit Opportunities

The 18-year-old England Under-21 forward has made just 11 appearances in all competitions this season, starting only three times across matches in the Carabao Cup and Champions League. Nwaneri has played 446 minutes and scored one goal, a significant reduction from his breakout 2024-25 campaign when he established himself as one of England’s most talented young players.

Arsenal’s summer spending spree of approximately £250 million on eight new players has directly impacted Nwaneri’s opportunities. The Gunners brought in Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke as experienced signings designed to strengthen their title challenge. The strategy has proven successful with Arsenal sitting five points clear at the top of the Premier League and maintaining a perfect Champions League record.

Mikel Arteta’s side have won 23, drawn four and lost just two of their 29 matches this season. If Arsenal beat Liverpool on Thursday, they will extend their lead over Manchester City to eight points. However, this success has come at the expense of younger squad members like Nwaneri, who must now compete with £67 million signing Eze and £48.5 million acquisition Madueke for attacking positions.

Despite speculation about a potential January loan move, neither Arsenal nor Nwaneri are considering that option. The club believes the teenager will benefit more from training alongside elite players during a title challenge than gaining minutes elsewhere. Nwaneri signed a new five-year contract in the summer running until 2030, with sources confirming he rejected interest from Borussia Dortmund and reported Chelsea links to remain at his boyhood club.

Arsenal face nine fixtures this month across the Premier League, FA Cup against Portsmouth and Champions League, providing opportunities for Nwaneri to impress. The versatile forward, who can play centrally in his preferred position or on the right wing, must capitalise on these chances to secure greater involvement in the second half of the season and continue developing his undoubted talent.
