Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini will meet with the Friedkin ownership tomorrow following rising tensions over the club’s January transfer activity, with the coach refusing to speak to media after Sunday’s victory at Lecce amid frustration over stalled negotiations for key targets.
Gasperini Set for Crunch Talks With Roma Ownership Over Transfer Window Delays
Gasperini chose not to make any comments after Roma’s win at the Via del Mare, neither on television nor in the press room, expecting that reporters would focus on transfer market questions that have created significant friction between him and the management. The coach clearly avoided the topic that has dominated recent weeks at the club.
Heated exchanges have taken place between sporting director Florent Massara and Gasperini following defeats against Juventus and Atalanta. The Roma coach believes he has maximized results with his current squad, pointing to the fact that it had been almost a decade since Roma finished the first half of the season with 36 points despite recent setbacks against top teams.
Gasperini had expected the January transfer window to begin under very different circumstances, having been promised reinforcements during conversations with ownership that were later compromised by errors in various negotiations. The coach had previously stated in September that he would attempt to relaunch players he had partially rejected, including Artem Dovbyk and Tommaso Baldanzi, after clamoring for attacking arrivals throughout August.
Current tensions have reached fever pitch due to the handling of negotiations for Giacomo Raspadori and Joshua Zirkzee. Two deals that appeared well-defined in terms of structure and timing are now far from completion, with Massara’s comments before the Lecce match confirming the delays and likely frustrating Gasperini further.
The meeting between Gasperini and the Friedkins was scheduled before Sunday’s match and the coach’s decision to remain silent, requested during an initial conference call yesterday. The atmosphere remains very tense, with Gasperini expecting immediate responses regarding at least four reinforcements needed due to injuries, player underperformance, and sporting objectives for the second half of the season.
