Marc Guehi Completes £30m Move to Man City and Signs Deal Until 2031
Manchester City have confirmed the £30 million signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, with the defender describing the move as the culmination of his hard work. Guehi said he is “really happy and incredibly proud” to be a City player and called the club “the best in England,” adding he is excited to meet his new team-mates, train hard and understand what Pep Guardiola expects from him.
The 25-year-old arrived in Manchester on Sunday on a private jet to complete the formalities and pass his medical before putting pen to paper. The deal is described as lucrative, worth a minimum of £200,000 per week, and ties him to the Etihad Stadium until 2031. Guehi also said he wants to grow as both a player and a person, calling the move a special moment for him and his family.
Guehi will not be available for Tuesday evening’s Champions League fixture against Bodo/Glimt, but he is due to make his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend. The defender revealed he turned down approaches from several other clubs to join City, pointing to Guardiola’s influence and the chance to win trophies as key reasons behind his decision.
City director of football Hugo Viana praised the signing, calling Guehi a “huge” talent and saying the club believes he will help them improve. Viana said Guehi has been “one of the best defenders in English football for quite some time,” describing him as a leader and “a brilliant professional” with strong defensive qualities, intelligence and energy.
The move comes with Arsenal leading the Premier League by seven points, while City have conceded seven more goals than Arsenal and kept two fewer clean sheets so far. Guehi has 26 England caps and is due to feature in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming World Cup in the United States this summer.
