Dietmar Hamann has called on Liverpool to consider a surprise move for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire, saying the defender could provide needed depth as injuries bite late in the January window. Maguire is in the final six months of his Old Trafford contract, and Hamann said a free transfer or pre-contract agreement should be explored. Liverpool’s options have been reduced further by multiple setbacks.
Hamann urges Liverpool to consider Harry Maguire amid defensive injuries
Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has urged the club to consider signing Manchester United defender Harry Maguire in a move that would test one of English football’s fiercest rivalries. With the January transfer window entering its final days, Hamann said Liverpool should look at the 32-year-old England international as they deal with what he described as a crisis at the back.
Maguire is in the final six months of his contract at Old Trafford and could be available for a nominal fee or via a pre-contract agreement, according to the report, with no substantive talks said to have taken place on an extension. Speaking to CasinoBeats via Empire of the Kop, Hamann backed the centre-back’s resilience. “You’ve got to give it to Harry Maguire because he got so much stick in the last few years and he always comes back,” Hamann said.
Hamann said Liverpool’s need is driven by a lack of dependable alternatives in the current squad. He questioned the depth behind the first-choice options and pointed to fitness problems elsewhere, saying Joe Gomez “has been around the squad for a long time but he’s never really been a starter for the team.” Hamann added that Conor Bradley is currently out injured and said it remains to be seen “how it affects him when he comes back.”
The report said Liverpool’s defensive resources are stretched ahead of a Champions League tie against Qarabag, with Virgil van Dijk described as the only senior centre-back available. It added that summer signing Giovanni Leoni is out for the season with an ACL injury, while Gomez recently suffered a hip injury against Bournemouth.
Despite the suggestion, the report described a deal as unlikely given the rivalry between the clubs. It noted that no player has transferred directly between Liverpool and Manchester United since Phil Chisnall moved in 1964, highlighting how rare any such move has historically been.
