Harry Maguire is reportedly open to leaving Manchester United for Serie A this January, with Inter Milan, Napoli and Fiorentina seriously evaluating moves for the centre-back despite Michael Carrick previously hailing him as a fantastic talisman for the club.
Maguire Open to Serie A Transfer Despite Carrick’s Praise for United Defender
The 32-year-old defender has started just four Premier League games this season after making 40 appearances across all competitions last term. Tuttomercato journalist Marco Conterio claims Maguire has opened up to a transfer to Italy, with three top Serie A clubs holding a dossier on the England international who is available for a cut-price fee before his contract expires at the end of the season.
Inter Milan, Napoli and Fiorentina are seriously evaluating Maguire’s profile as they consider January moves for the experienced centre-back. The defender missed a couple of months through a thigh injury earlier this season, contributing to his limited playing time under former manager Ruben Amorim before Michael Carrick’s recent appointment as caretaker boss at Old Trafford.
Carrick’s arrival could potentially change Maguire’s situation, with the defender having previously praised the temporary manager after his last spell in charge during 2021. Maguire said at the time that Michael is a really likable man who all the lads respect, describing him as amazing with each and every player at the club.
The caretaker manager has also been complimentary about Maguire’s contributions to Manchester United, describing him as a real talisman during his punditry work earlier this season. Carrick stated that he was pleased for Harry Maguire, noting that the defender had been through the mill at times and faced some unfair periods, but had come back unbelievably well to turn into a leader and real talisman at the club.
ESPN’s Mark Ogden expects Manchester United to make no incomings or outgoings during the January transfer window, with Carrick expected to work with the squad he has inherited. Sources indicate United are aware of the need to bolster their midfield options but will not make short-term signings, with leading targets Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba unavailable this month.
