Hull City are on the verge of announcing the signing of Toby Collyer from Manchester United, with journalist Ben Jacobs reporting the deal is expected to be confirmed within the next 24 hours. The 22-year-old midfielder is set to join the Tigers on loan for the remainder of the season, a move both clubs believe will aid his development as he looks for more senior minutes.

Collyer started the campaign on loan at West Bromwich Albion after joining the Championship club last summer, but the spell did not go to plan. Despite arriving with a reputation built at youth level, including captaining England’s youth sides, he struggled to establish himself at The Hawthorns and found opportunities limited in the first half of the season.

He made only three league starts for West Brom and totalled 253 minutes of Championship football. Injuries further hampered his progress, and Manchester United decided to recall him by the turn of the year. United are said to remain confident in Collyer’s potential and continue to see him as a player who could break into the first-team squad in the future.

With United having fewer minutes to offer because of their failure to qualify for European competition, loan moves have become an important part of Collyer’s progression. Hull moved quickly to secure him, believing the energetic midfielder can add dynamism and depth to their squad in the second half of the season, with expectations he can complete the move in time to be available against Swansea City this weekend.
