France international right-back Jonathan Clauss has signed a two-year contract extension with Nice, keeping the 33-year-old defender at the INEOS-owned Ligue 1 club until 2028 after a turbulent first half of the season that included strong transfer interest from Bayer Leverkusen.
Jonathan Clauss Commits Future to Nice With Two-Year Contract Extension Until 2028
The former Lens and Marseille full-back has committed his future to Les Aiglons despite experiencing a challenging campaign that saw him make 22 appearances across all competitions during Nice’s difficult opening months. The contract extension ensures Nice retain one of their key defensive players through to the summer of 2028.
Clauss was omitted from the squad for two matches earlier in the campaign amid concrete interest from Bayer Leverkusen, who were actively seeking a replacement for Liverpool-bound Jeremie Frimpong. The German club’s pursuit of the France international created uncertainty around his future at the Allianz Riviera.
Former Nice head coach Franck Haise publicly confirmed that Clauss wanted to leave the club before the summer transfer window closed, with the defender keen on securing a move to the Bundesliga champions. The admission highlighted the unsettled nature of the player’s situation during the early stages of the season.
The prospective transfer to Bayer Leverkusen ultimately collapsed, leaving Clauss to remain on the French Riviera. Nice have now secured his services long-term with the new contract, ensuring they will not lose the experienced defender as a free agent in the near future.
