Liverpool have fuelled expectations that highly rated defender Wellity Lucky will depart on loan before the January window closes, with his recent omission from the Under-21 squad cited as a significant clue. The 20-year-old, described as fully fit, also did not feature with the first team. The report said Liverpool often signal development plans through selection choices rather than public statements.

Liverpool omission of fit defender Wellity Lucky points to likely loan move

Liverpool appear to have provided a strong indication that Wellity Lucky could leave on loan this month, with the player’s absence from recent squads highlighted as the key development. Anfield Watch first reported that the club had dropped a “significant hint” over the defender’s short-term future, and the report said a temporary move is increasingly likely before the window shuts.

According to the report, Lucky was omitted from Liverpool’s Under-21 squad despite being fully fit and also failed to feature with the first team. The story described that “double absence” as unusual for a player who made his competitive debut earlier this season, suggesting the club is deliberately keeping him “between squads” at a point in the calendar when decisions on academy pathways are often made.

The report said Liverpool typically avoid leaving young players without match minutes and often use loans to accelerate development when first-team involvement is limited. It described a loan as offering “minutes, responsibility and exposure” that training cannot replicate, particularly for central defenders whose progression depends on decision-making, positioning and timing in unpredictable situations.

Lucky signed a three-year contract last summer, the report said, turning down interest elsewhere to commit his future to Liverpool. It added that the defender has earned senior involvement in cup competition and has been included on Premier League benches, with Liverpool viewed as valuing his comfort on the ball, calmness under pressure and willingness to step into space.

The report also pointed to academy-level squad movement as part of the context, saying the arrivals of Noah Adekoya and Mor Talla Ndiaye have increased depth in the Under-21 defensive unit. With that competition reducing the need for Lucky to remain at that level, the story said a loan would align with Liverpool’s broader January approach to managing development, even if the club does not publicly outline its intentions.
