Gabriel Martinelli made Arsenal history by becoming the first Gunners player to score in five consecutive Champions League matches during their 3-0 victory over Club Brugge in Belgium. The Brazilian winger humbly praised teammate Noni Madueke’s wonder-strike, claiming it was better than his own curling effort in the comprehensive win.
Martinelli Makes Arsenal History With Fifth Consecutive Champions League Goal
Mikel Arteta’s wingers were both in red-hot form as Arsenal maintained their perfect Champions League record with six wins from six matches. Madueke opened the scoring with a spectacular 30-yard strike before doubling the lead after the break, while Martinelli added a brilliant curling finish to complete the scoring in Belgium.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Martinelli modestly conceded that Madueke had scored the best goal of the evening. The Brazilian said after achieving his historic milestone: “We were speaking, I said your one was nicer than mine! We were both happy to help the team.” He expressed his delight at the achievement while emphasizing his focus on helping the team rather than personal records.
Martinelli continued his post-match reflections by praising the overall performance and result. “I’m really happy with the result and the performance. We’ve spoken about that yesterday, I wasn’t thinking too much about this, I was just trying to go on the pitch to help my team,” he explained. The winger added that scoring and achieving five consecutive Champions League goals left him feeling proud of the accomplishment.
Arteta paid tribute to both wingers following their impressive displays, particularly highlighting Madueke’s contribution after his brilliant brace. The Spanish manager described the England international’s opening goal as an “unbelievable” strike, praising the individual quality and magic moment that demonstrated why Arsenal invested £52 million in the summer signing. He emphasized how having players back in the front line has improved the team’s performance significantly.
Arsenal remain the only team in the Champions League with a perfect record and are virtually assured of a top-eight finish heading into their final two group phase matches against Inter Milan and Kairat Almaty. The Gunners now turn their attention to Saturday evening’s Premier League clash against Wolves as they seek to respond to last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, with Manchester City now just two points behind in the title race.
