Charlton Athletic have recalled defender Zach Mitchell from his loan spell at Hibernian, bringing an early end to a move that began in September. The 21-year-old made only two appearances for the Edinburgh club. Hibs head coach David Gray said the decision “makes sense” given Mitchell’s lack of minutes and the competition for places in his position.
Charlton recall Zach Mitchell from Hibs loan after limited game time
Zach Mitchell has been recalled from his loan at Hibernian by parent club Charlton Athletic. The 21-year-old joined Hibs in September, but featured only twice during his time with the Edinburgh side, prompting the decision to send him back to Charlton before the end of the spell.
Hibs head coach David Gray said the move was logical because Mitchell had not been able to secure regular playing time. Gray pointed to strong competition in Mitchell’s position, adding that the defender had to remain patient while waiting for opportunities that did not come frequently enough.
“Zach is a young player who wants to play games, which we completely understand, so it makes sense for him to return to Charlton Athletic as it’s not something we can guarantee,” Gray said. He also thanked Mitchell for his approach during the loan and the work he put in behind the scenes.
Gray said Mitchell had been “a model professional” throughout his spell at Hibs and praised his attitude in training and willingness to improve. He described the defender as “fantastic to work with” and “always keen to learn,” before wishing him “nothing but the best moving forward.”
