Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson has responded to reports linking Sandro Tonali with Arsenal, stating he has no knowledge of the alleged approach while emphasizing the midfielder’s importance to the club. According to Caughtoffside.com.
Newcastle chief addresses Arsenal’s reported approach for Tonali
When questioned by talkSPORT about claims that Tonali’s agent offered the player to Arsenal, Hopkinson remained diplomatically vague. “I have no idea. That’s our answer,” he stated, adding that manager Eddie Howe was equally unaware of any developments.
The Athletic had reported that the Italy international’s representative approached the Gunners during January, though any potential move was too late for the winter transfer window. This has sparked speculation about a possible summer pursuit by Mikel Arteta’s side.
Hopkinson was emphatic about Tonali’s value to Newcastle, describing him as a “superstar player” who remains under contract. He acknowledged that several of their players attract interest from rival clubs, suggesting this creates unwanted marketplace disruption designed to unsettle their squad.
The CEO praised Tonali’s attitude and integration at St James’ Park, noting the midfielder’s consistently positive demeanor. “Sandro has been a wonderful player, a smile’s on every day I see him, I believe he’s happy here and we’re certainly happy with him,” Hopkinson emphasized.
Arsenal’s current success across multiple competitions could prove attractive to the 25-year-old, with the north London club topping both the Premier League and Champions League league phase while reaching the Carabao Cup final this season.
