Newcastle appear poised to secure a record-breaking deal for Reims midfielder Patrick Zabi, with the move potentially serving as preparation for Sandro Tonali’s eventual departure. The 19-year-old Ivorian has emerged as a key target amid speculation surrounding the Italian’s future. According to Football365.com.

Newcastle edge closer to record Zabi deal as Tonali exit speculation grows

French outlet So Foot claim Newcastle emissaries were seen this Monday in Reims attempting to complete the transfer for Patrick Zabi. The 19-year-old Ivorian will commit to Newcastle over a four or five-year contract but remain with Reims until the season’s end, according to the report.

The move is expected to break Reims’ transfer record, surpassing the €35m fee Paris Saint-Germain paid for Hugo Ekitike. Zabi has made 21 appearances across all competitions this season, contributing two goals and three assists as a box-to-box midfielder who has drawn comparisons to Paul Pogba.

Speculation surrounding Sandro Tonali’s future has intensified after his agent offered the midfielder to Arsenal, though The Athletic’s David Ornstein clarified no contact occurred between the clubs. Ornstein confirmed on X that while Arsenal explored the possibility, a January exit for the 25-year-old was impossible.

Reports last month suggested Manchester United were interested in Zabi alongside Paris FC, but Newcastle appear to have moved decisively. The signing could serve as a replacement for either Tonali or Joelinton, who has struggled with niggling injury problems this season.

Eddie Howe recently emphasized the importance of securing value for money in transfers, stating the club must consider business now versus the summer window. The manager warned against signing the wrong player, noting the long-term commitment involved in three, four, or five-year contracts.
