River Plate Sign Matías Viña on Loan From Brazil

River Plate have finalised the signing of Uruguayan full-back Matías Viña on a one-year loan deal from Brazilian football costing $500,000, with the agreement including a purchase obligation clause for 50% of his rights subject to specific sporting objectives during the 2026 season.

River Plate Complete Loan Signing of Uruguayan Defender Matías Viña

The Núñez club confirmed the arrival of Viña as part of their ongoing transfer activity, with the left-back becoming the latest addition to strengthen their defensive options. The loan arrangement provides River Plate with the option to secure permanent ownership of half the player’s registration rights if predetermined performance targets are met throughout the upcoming campaign.

Viña’s signing continues River Plate’s strategy of recruiting from Brazil’s Serie A, joining midfielders Fausto Vera and Aníbal Moreno to form what the club describes as a high-calibre trio with experience competing at the highest level. All three players have featured in recent Copa Libertadores finals, with their involvement spanning the 2024 and 2025 editions of South America’s premier club competition.

The Uruguayan defender arrives through a strategic loan deal similar to Vera’s arrangement, while Moreno represented the club’s biggest investment at $7 million. River Plate have spent a total of $8 million during this transfer window as they seek to strengthen their squad with players possessing international competition experience and proven quality in demanding leagues.

The club’s recruitment approach focuses on securing talent with continental tournament rhythm, with Viña’s addition providing defensive reinforcement as River Plate aim to regain what they term “continental dominance” through strategic investments in experienced South American players.
