Gian Piero Gasperini said “Bailey frees up a position” as Roma step up their search for reinforcements, with Mathys Tel identified as the preferred replacement. According to Il Corriere della Sera, Tottenham are reluctant to sell the French winger despite Thomas Frank leaving him out of the Champions League squad. Gasperini also admires Leo Sauer, though talks with Feyenoord are on hold.
Roma Step Up Winger Search, With Mathys Tel Top Target to Replace Bailey
“Bailey frees up a position,” Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini said at a press conference, framing the club’s approach as it looks to move quickly in the market. “Opportunities must be seized, or we’ll remain as we are,” Gasperini added, signalling urgency in Roma’s efforts to strengthen the squad.
According to Il Corriere della Sera, Tel is the favourite around Trigoria for the role of right-footed left winger. The report said Tottenham are holding back from selling the 2005-born player, even after coach Thomas Frank removed him from the club’s Champions League squad.
Gasperini also likes Leo Sauer as another option on the left flank. Sauer is described as a right-footed left winger, 20 years old like Tel, and valued for his ability to play the role. However, the report said Feyenoord did not open up to a January move, with discussions postponed until next summer.
With Roma needing reinforcements now, the report said further contacts will be made in the coming hours. Gasperini suggested the dynamics could shift as February 2 draws closer, saying the nearer the date gets, the more teams may compromise.
