Barcelona are preparing for a Champions League trip to Prague while significant squad business accelerates off the pitch. Goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is expected to confirm his departure this week, with Girona aiming to complete a loan deal for the rest of the season. Barcelona are also braced for Dro Fernandez’s move to Paris Saint-Germain to be finalised, potentially shaping further recruitment plans.
Ter Stegen poised for Girona loan as Barcelona brace for busy week
Barcelona’s next few days include a trip to Prague for their latest Champions League match, but there is a chance not everyone will travel as the club’s directors work on player movement. Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is registered in Barcelona’s Champions League squad this season but has not played in the competition. The report said it is unlikely he will feature before leaving the club.
Ter Stegen is expected to join Girona on loan for the remainder of the season as he looks for regular minutes ahead of this summer’s World Cup in North America. Sport reported Girona plan to finalise the arrival of the 33-year-old goalkeeper before the end of the week. Ter Stegen has expressed openness to the move, although a full agreement has not yet been completed.
The report added that an understanding is believed to be in place between all parties, with the plan for the deal to be wrapped up ahead of next Monday’s La Liga match against Getafe. Ter Stegen would have “every chance” to start in that fixture, according to the report. He has yet to make a Champions League appearance for Barcelona this season.
Ter Stegen would not be the only departure expected this week. Barcelona are also anticipating that Dro Fernandez’s move to Paris Saint-Germain will be finalised. The 18-year-old, the report said, shocked Barcelona by submitting a transfer request and has already agreed terms with the reigning European champions on a contract running until 2030.
It remains unclear whether the exits of Ter Stegen and Dro will provide Barcelona the leeway to make another signing. Joao Cancelo has already arrived, but the report said there is scope for at least one more player to be added to Hansi Flick’s squad for the second half of the season.
