Tottenham expect to complete a £35 million deal for Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher after moving ahead of Aston Villa in the race for the England international’s signature, with personal terms understood to be a formality.

Tottenham Move Ahead of Aston Villa in £35 Million Race for Conor Gallagher

Villa appeared to be in pole position to land Gallagher but Spurs are now closing in on the 25-year-old after expressing a willingness to meet Atletico’s valuation. The former Chelsea midfielder joined Atletico Madrid in a £33 million move in 2024 but is now set for a return to the Premier League after just 18 months in Spain.

Villa wanted to sign the England international on an initial loan deal with an option to make the move permanent, but Tottenham’s commitment to a straight purchase has given them the advantage in negotiations. Gallagher has not yet agreed personal terms with Spurs, but that is understood to be a formality as the midfielder pushes for a swift resolution to the transfer.

The midfielder is keen to finalise the transfer before Atletico’s game against Deportivo in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday night. Gallagher will hope a move back to the Premier League boosts his chances of breaking back into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup, having only played once under the German manager so far.

Spurs are looking to add to their midfield options after Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for at least three months. The Uruguay international needs hamstring surgery after sustaining an injury in the Premier League defeat at Bournemouth last week, leaving manager Ange Postecoglou short of options in the middle of the park.

Gallagher featured for 59 minutes in England’s 3-1 friendly defeat by Senegal under Tuchel but will be hoping regular Premier League football can help him force his way back into contention for major tournament selection. The 25-year-old’s versatility and Premier League experience make him an attractive option for Tottenham as they look to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.
