Tottenham have reached an agreement with Brazilian club Bahia over a €10 million fee for striker Alejo Veliz, but the 22-year-old Argentine has rejected the proposed move as he wants to remain at current loan club Rosario Central to compete in the Copa Libertadores.
Tottenham’s €10 Million Veliz Deal with Bahia Stalls as Striker Rejects Move
Tottenham and Bahia have agreed on a fee of around €10 million for the permanent transfer of Alejo Veliz this month, but the striker is not keen on the Brazilian move. The 22-year-old Argentine prefers to stay at Rosario Central, where he is currently on loan, because he wants to compete in the Copa Libertadores with his boyhood club rather than relocate to Brazil.
Veliz has struggled to establish himself at Tottenham since joining the Premier League club, making just one senior appearance during his time in north London. The striker came through the ranks at Rosario Central before his move to Spurs and has had unsuccessful loan spells previously. It is clear he does not have a future at Tottenham, making a permanent departure the ideal solution for all parties involved.
The Argentine forward has performed well during his current stint at Rosario Central, scoring 24 goals in 79 matches for the club across all competitions. Playing regularly at his boyhood club appears ideal for his development, and he is clearly enjoying his football in familiar surroundings. Veliz’s preference to remain in Argentina rather than move to Brazil has complicated Tottenham’s plans to recoup money from his sale.
Tottenham are looking to offload the player permanently and have already secured agreement with Bahia over the transfer fee. However, the Brazilian club must now convince Veliz to accept the move, which remains uncertain given his stated preference. It remains to be seen whether Rosario Central might be willing to make a permanent offer for the striker, which could represent the ideal outcome for the player’s career development.
