Manchester United’s position on Joshua Zirkzee remains unchanged despite Roma’s continued interest, according to the Italian club’s director of football. Roma’s Frederic Massara said United rejected an approach weeks ago and have not softened since, even as speculation continues around possible squad changes in January. Zirkzee, currently injured, watched Saturday’s derby win at Old Trafford from the directors’ box.
Man United Stay Firm on Joshua Zirkzee Despite Roma Interest, Massara Says
United fans enjoyed an “excellent weekend” after Saturday’s derby win at Old Trafford, but caretaker boss Michael Carrick faces another tough test with a trip to Arsenal on Sunday. Off the pitch, talk has continued around possible changes to Carrick’s squad as the January window progresses.
One report suggested a deal for former Wolves captain Ruben Neves is close. United sources, however, have repeatedly played down the likelihood of signings this month unless they fit a long-term plan, as was the case with Antoine Semenyo.
Semenyo turned down a move to Old Trafford and played in Saturday’s match for Manchester City. Against that backdrop, Carrick’s options appear set to stay largely as they are, even as United are linked with players elsewhere.
Roma have been keen to sign Netherlands international Zirkzee, who is injured and watched the City game from the directors’ box. Massara indicated Roma have made their interest clear but have not been able to move discussions forward because of United’s stance.
“Manchester United said no quite clearly a couple of weeks ago and they have not changed their minds,” Massara told Italian media before Roma’s 2-0 win at Torino. The report added that Zirkzee wants to leave United to further his international ambitions, but Massara’s comments suggest the move is not close to being agreed.
