Wolves secure Gomes and Armstrong as club prepares for expected relegation
Angel Gomes joins on loan until the end of the season, with Wolves securing an option to buy the England international for approximately £6m. The Premier League strugglers also completed the permanent signing of striker Adam Armstrong on a three-and-a-half-year contract for an initial fee of £7m.
The signings follow the £48m sale of striker Jorgen Strand Larsen to Crystal Palace, also completed on deadline day. Wolves are currently bottom of the Premier League, 18 points from safety, and planning for an expected relegation to the Championship according to the report.
Manager Rob Edwards expressed his excitement about securing Gomes, revealing they had been in discussions for several weeks. “He’s really excited to get playing in England, and it’s really exciting for us to have someone who’s hungry to be here,” Edwards said about the four-cap England international.
Gomes started his career at Manchester United, making 10 appearances before joining Lille in 2020 where he played 126 times and scored 10 goals. He joined Marseille last summer and has scored four goals in 19 games, leaving Roberto de Zerbi’s side third in Ligue 1.
Edwards praised Armstrong’s qualities as both a goalscorer and versatile forward option. “He’s someone I’ve admired for a long, long time. He’s a really good footballer, a goal threat and a goalscorer,” the manager stated. Armstrong has scored 11 goals in 32 games for Southampton this season and netted 43 goals in 174 games during his four-and-a-half-year spell at the club.
