Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed that Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic are expected to start together for AC Milan against Genoa on Thursday evening, marking only the second time this season the attacking duo will feature in the same starting XI despite neither player being at peak physical condition.

Allegri Confirms Leao and Pulisic Partnership Despite Fitness Concerns Ahead of Genoa Clash

The Milan manager revealed at his pre-match press conference that both forwards remain hampered by ongoing physical issues but should be available for selection at San Siro. Pulisic continues to struggle with a hamstring problem that bothers him intermittently, while Leao has been dealing with discomfort following his recent return from calf and adductor injuries that disrupted his early season.

Allegri acknowledged the pair have played just 20 minutes together this campaign, with their only previous joint start coming in Milan’s 1-0 victory over Inter on November 23. The coach emphasised that reaching March in optimal condition remains the priority, stating that these winter months are crucial for building towards the business end of the season with patience and careful squad management.

The Milan boss highlighted Leao’s need to focus on goalscoring despite his fitness struggles, noting that the Portuguese winger managed to find the net in the recent victory at Cagliari even while not fully fit. Allegri stressed that forwards are ultimately judged on their ability to score goals and expects improvement from Leao as he works through his physical issues.

Christopher Nkunku will miss Thursday’s fixture due to an ankle knock sustained recently, with Allegri hopeful the French forward will return for Milan’s upcoming trip to Florence. The manager also provided updates on new signing Niclas Fullkrug, who made his Serie A debut against Cagliari and impressed with characteristics the squad previously lacked.

Allegri praised veteran midfielder Luka Modric’s professionalism and humility in training, describing his passion for the game as exemplary for younger players. The coach also expressed satisfaction with Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s performances, though he wants the English midfielder to become more decisive in the penalty area and improve his aerial presence during attacking situations.
